Let’s consider what I believe is the most common, and the most significant, problem that people believe they’re facing — money lack. It’s a disturbing problem for many, a difficult problem, and it’s also an interesting problem to consider for this reason in particular.

People don’t actually want money.

That statement will get the attention of some, perhaps many, and there will surely be disagreement. But of course people want money. They have a money lack and they want to resolve it by having more money. What am I even talking about? Hear me out, friends, hear me out. People do not actually want money and why should they. Money has almost no innate value; in fact it’s nearly worthless. If you doubt that consider this thinking exercise:

You’re in the middle of the desert, alone, no other people within hundreds of miles of you. You have one thousand dollars in cash on your person. How much use will that thousand dollars cash be to you? None. An umbrella against the sun and a canteen of wat…
