Okay, what the heck is going on with these quotes?
They are examples of redirecting mental realm activity that looks to externals for our well-being, for our salvation. This is an extremely common response in humans, to look to the physical realm or the world or the external, or however you want to refer to it, for what we believe sustains us and makes us happy. It makes sense because we have perceptions of all of these things that seem to be outside of us; and so we figure we just need to acquire some of them and bring them into our possession. One problem with this outlook is, it’s not always easy, or even doable, to bring externals into our possession. Another problem is, God is within us and so why should we be looking out at all?
