Giving attention to God
I once saw a photograph that I thought was symbolic. The photo was of an enormous telescope pointing out, into the distance. The symbolism for me was the correlation between the telescope and a tendency within the human condition — the tendency to look out, to focus outward, to keep attention out in the world. Focusing outward like this would seem perfectly reasonable to most people, beneficial even. The world is happening around us so why shouldn’t we pay attention? The more attention we pay, the better we can navigate the world. Perhaps, but keeping focus constantly in the world is spiritually improper for this reason: if you focus on the external world you do not focus on the internal God presence. And if you do not focus on the God presence you lose connection with it and have an experience of separation. Being separate from God means being separate from God’s good, from God’s grace, from God’s blessing.
